I have to admit i'm a bit divided on the whole tourist-favela thing. i'm from europe but have lived in Rocinha for a year (no NGO, no organisation, just renting a room) Rocinha is a beatifull place, people in general are so kind and open, they do everything for themselves and instead of waiting for a government who don't gives a #$% they will tell you that this independency is part of their indetity now. but when it comes to the tourist groups guided in the favela a lot of people find it a bit degrading, they feel rather looked down uppon, instead of understood. most tourist come here to look 'at the poor', see a machine gun or two and to have a story to tell when they get home.
that's the bitter truth.
i think instead of concentrating on the whole poverty issue the best thing to do is focuss on how to get the extreme violence and commandos off the streets. even the specialised police forces invade the favelas with only one objective, KILL, (i'm talking about BOPE here). i've seen and experienced all this from up close. most people are just happy with what they have. they just dread the violence in the streets.
if you want change for real, don't pay some guide to show you around the place like it's a zoo. Rocinha and all periferias in Rio deserve more respect.

I took the same Be a Local tour this August and have to agree with you on just about every count. Seemed terrible to be there as a tourist, but I am so glad I know now what some people in Rio have to deal with on a day to day basis. Your photos are amazing. Well done.

good for foreigner to see how goverment in Brazil do not help the people. In the favela people help them self and try to make the best of what they have, without complain about anything.

www.faveladodarocinha.com

The photo of the view from the top - you can see where I stayed in Rio last December! I've got a photo from there of the favela - all twinkly lights at nighttime. It looks like a wave pushing between the mountains. Great pics.
