De Wonderboom

with 5 comments

You may remember the Wondertrees – die Wunderbäume – that I saw in Berlin; well, there’s a Wonderboom here in Aalst, too. I saw it when I was having a smoke outside the launderette a couple of days ago. (Dutch-speakers: did I get it right? Is it “de Wonderboom” or “het Wonderboom”?)

  1. yep. it’s ‘de boom’.

as a dutch speaker I haven’t really thought about this because, you know, i *feel* when it’s ‘het’ or ‘de’ something but now that I dó think about it seems most things that are ‘das’ in german are ‘het’ in dutch, these are all ‘neutral’ words, and that since dutch lacks the distinction between male (‘der’ in german) and female (‘die’) that just all gets ‘de’.
