Tables
Bars need tables. Normal tables. The sort of tables you can eat a knife-and-fork meal off. In my opinion the worst thing that happened when bars got all fancy was the introduction of sofas and coffee tables. Kinda makes sense in a nightclub: you’re more relaxed, and they are obviously better for any copping-off opportunities. But in a bar, where people tend to begin the night sober and you might want to have a conversation with your friends, the sofa and coffee table arrangement is awful. Just think of how easy a conversation is around a regular table. You can pull your chair in, lean on the table, drink, and your heads are relatively close together. They are built to enable socialbility. The sofa and coffee table arrangement, though, totally retards sociability. The only people you can talk to in any comfort are the people either side of you. If you are having a conversation with someone on a sofa on the other side of the coffee table, all comfort that the sofa is there to provide disappears. Particularly because the type of bars with sofas tend to also have louder music. You have to raise your voice. Making everything even louder. So everyone raises their voices, and they scooch to the edge of the sofa and lean forward (rendering the original comfortable intention of the sofas redundant; a regular dining chair is way more comfortable than perching on the edge of a sofa), still with a huge coffee table between you. It doesn’t promote conversation at all. Bars need normal tables.

Home and Dry
This was released ten years ago. Ten years. Still a beautiful song and a wonderful video. I can still clearly remember going to Saturn, a big electrical chain store, in Berlin on my lunch break with my then-girlfriend to go and buy the Pet Shop Boys “Release” CD on the day it came out. Not my favourite Pet Shop Boys album, but this is definitely top five Pet Shop Boys songs for me. Especially the bit where Chris Lowe says “we’re going home.” Love that bit.

Turner, Montana
A couple of years ago, I did an infographic about Turner, Montana being the farthest town in the contiguous United States from a Major League Baseball park:
(it’s also in the Flip Flop Fly Ball which is still available at bookstores of varying quality).
Journalist Conor Dougherty decided to visit Turner, Montana. You can read his article (and see his video) for the Wall Street Journal here.
I really want to visit Turner now I’ve read and seen that.
The view
I moved into a new flat at the weekend. I’m loving the view from the balcony. I can see the mountains on the edge of the city; and every night, there’s a sunset behind the World Trade Center.
I’ve never been on a boat
Very pretty
And not really giving a shit about lip syncing properly.
