The Beautiful South vs. Los Tigres del Norte

without comments

Los Tigres del Norte are a popular band in these parts. Although they are based in California, their roots are in northern Mexico, and they play norteño music. I heard one of their songs the other day. A song called “Golpes en el Corazon.” This is it:

Looking at the discography on a Web site about the group, the earliest mention of the song is on an album called El Ejemplo, released in 1995. Six years after this Beautiful South song…

Could be a coincidence, I guess, but damn, they sound similar.

Three elements of a bigger picture about Mexico City that I’m working on. These are fans of the city’s three soccer teams: Cruz Azul, Pumas, and Club América.

¡Holiday!

without comments

Here’s a new picture story thingy. It’s called ¡Holiday! and as seems to have happened a fair bit this year, it’s old stuff that I’ve finally got around to doing/finishing. I began this in the summer of 2011, and at the time, it was just a few drawings of a dude on vacation without any real desire for it to be a story. I had kind of forgotten about the drawings. But there was definitely a path from those drawings for it to be a simple story. So every day for the last few days I added one more drawing, and now it’s a done, a story with ten pictures.

Pop! & Circumstance

without comments

My Internet pal, Marnie, does a site called Pop! & Circumstance. Lots of nice music mixes. She asked me to do a guest mix for her, which I was honoured to do.

You can hear it here.

Se compran…

without comments

Every day in Mexico City, a pick-up truck drives around the neighbourhood, with a recording of a horrible wailing woman’s voice, announcing, “Se compran colchones, tambores, refrigeradores, estufas, lavadoras, microondas o algo de fierro viejo que venda.” They buy your old stuff, basically. Above: drawing of.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

without comments

I’ve re-written the lyrics of this popular song so that they are no longer creepy, because they are really creepy.

I really can’t stay

Baby, it’s cold outside, so I’ll call you a cab so that you get home safely and don’t freeze your toes off. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Maybe I can call you, if you fancy doing something at the weekend.

The end.

Bohemia

without comments

Bottle of Bohemia, drawn last night whilst drinking said beer. It was a super quick drawing, because once I’d started doing it, I realised that a waiter would likely come and remove the bottle if he saw it was empty. It was kind of fun to do, though; to have an undefined time limit on drawing. I got all but one of the shadows done before he took the bottle away. So I was forced–forced!–to order another just so I could finish the drawing.

The man who loved Christmas porn

with 3 comments

Every year, around the end of November, I kinda start thinking about doing a Christmassy thing for the site. It’s something I did in the early days, but not so much lately. But this year, I’ve done something. Hallelujah, maybe..? So, it’s called The man who loved Christmas porn, and the idea came from hearing something Dan Savage mentioned on his podcast a couple of years ago (and last Christmas, and last week, too) regarding his disdain for Christmas-themed pornography. It got me thinking, there must be somebody who likes it. So I wrote/drew this. It is worth noting, before you ask, that I agree with Dan Savage: Christmas porn seems kinda silly to me. Older Christmas-themed stuff I’ve done can be found here.

Cute

without comments

I was in a bit of a shitty mood yesterday. Not really sure why; it was came on like a thunder storm and stuck around for most of the day. Drew this to try and combat the mood.

And I also drew this: a Venn diagram that ended up turning into a beret, sunglasses, and lips.
