I have this theory that my own blogging habits suffered because of Twitter. Pre-Twitter, if I had some little thought about something, I’d expand it into a few paragraphs et voila! Une nouvelle article de blog!

Nowadays, though, back blogging, I’ve started making notes of tweets, notes to come back to them at some point. Which brings us here to this silly quick “joke.”

I have a vague memory of studying Benelux as part of my geography O-level way back in the day. And the name always made me happy. A word made from bits of three words. How cool is that?

Maybe it’s because I was born in a country made up of four smaller countries. Maybe it’s just that I liked small countries like Luxembourg. Maybe it’s because I like the idea of European countries working together for the greater good… Seriously, why did you vote to leave the EU? Why did you do that? We already have control of our borders and our laws. It can’t have actually been the bananas, right? You leave us no other choice, through the power of crossing out other options, to assume you are bigots. So fucking bigoted in fact, that you’ll happily shoot yourself in the foot, and shoot your children and grandchildren in their feet, just because you don’t like seeing Polish words on shop windows in your town?

Okay. Where was I?

Yes: I liked that Factory Records had a Belgian offshoot called Factory Benelux. I only owned one of their records, though: FBN-22, a 12″ of Murder by New Order.

And I’ve often admired how the Luxembourg flag. I like it quite a lot, actually.

A tangent here, that really is just a way of showing off this drawing I did last year of a logo for an imaginary Luxembourg sausage festival.

I like that the Luxembourg flag is so similar to the Netherlands one, like the grand duke fella said, “I dig their flag, but I want ours to be brighter!”

The Netherlands flag is fine…

…but Luxembourg is the remix that turned a top 40 song into a top five hit.

Both of them, though, are better than the Belgian flag. It’s like they took the German flag and made a worse remix.

The flag fans amongst you will now be saying, those proportions are off, Craig.

You will be continuing, you seem to have them all at 2:3 proportion, which is fine for the Dutch flag, but we all know that the Luxembourg flag should be 1:2 or 3:5, and the national flag of Belgium is 13:15, it’s only the civil ensign that is 2:3. What you playing at, Robinson?

And you would be right. Here are the correct flags. I is ashamed.

The 13:15 Belgian flag is a lot better, I think, than the 2:3 one, so I take it back about being a bad German remix.

(It is entirely a coincidence, that on this very day three years ago, I did a blog post about Golden rectangle flags.)

So what did they do when they wanted a flag for Benelux? They did this:

Not very good, is it? The lion looks like someone pretending he can do kung fu has suddenly realised the person he is about to fight actually can do kung fu.

And also, is that his cock and balls we can see next to his thigh? Or maybe it’s a referee’s whistle.

According to Wikipedia, the lion is from the Belgian coat of arms.

I have no answers, I have no idea how to make it better, but just as an experiment, I took the three 2:3 versions and laid them on top of each other to see what would happen. This is what happened:
