A little animation visualising something about “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” that’s often hurt my brain.

January mix

with 5 comments

Sneaking in just before the month is over, here’s the January Mix. There’s no theme or anything, just a bunch of songs I’ve listen to a lot over the past couple of weeks.

The Osmonds “Crazy Horses”
The Archies “Jingle Jangle”
Chad and Jeremy “A Summer Song”
Bart Davenport “Beg Steal Borrow”
Art Garfunkel “Break Away”
Gilbert O’Sullivan “Alone Again (Naturally)”
Jon Brion “Monday”
Syd Barrett “Here I Go”
Robert Sean Leonard and Steve Zahn “The Lonely 1”
Daniel Johnston “Some People Don’t Even Know If It’s Christmas Time”
Beck “Lost Cause”
Mercury Rev “Endlessly”
Queen “You’re My Best Friend”

I suppose I should say a few words about the current status of this blog. I still stand by what I said in November, that the blog is kinda over. But, I think it’s only over in the sense that I’ll no longer be writing about stuff that happens in my life (although I will just say this: I’m going to see Shakira tonight and I’m exceedingly excited!).
I’ve realised over the past seven weeks that I do need something like this though; something that allows me to do little things, like the Lego stuff, to keep my brain ticking over. In fact, it’ll probably end up being a lot like the old Technically Perfect Hair stuff I used to do.
I have a massive case of writer’s block at the moment. I’ve got no ideas of what to do next for FFF. Nothing at all. And sitting around twiddling my thumbs is doing me no good, so Lego and Post-it notes on TV screens it’ll have to be until my head sorts itself out.
Anyway, hope you enjoy the mix. Have a good weekend.

No bugs, no tickers

Post-it notes stuck on my television screen so I can watch any of the 20-odd channels I receive without having to see any digital on-screen graphics (station idents or news tickers).

My hopes for 2007

with 3 comments

I did something for Colette’s My 2007 project. A bunch of arty types all did an A4-sized piece of art to be sold, with profits going to WWF. There’s lots of nice stuff there, so it’s worth having a look. Not sure how the selling of these pieces works, but, hey, it’s your chance to get your hands on some snazzy stuff.

In other news, the last fiddly bits of the atlas are being sorted out right now and I can tell you that the search for a new name for it is over. It will be called Atlas, Schmatlas. I’m exceedingly happy with it. The designer has done a brilliant job with the layout, and I can’t wait til autumn when it’ll be in the shops.

I hope you all had a good Hannukah, Christmas, Virgin Megastore sale, etc.

Fake post

without comments

This post is only here because when I look at the archive list on the side of this page, there was only one month missing since April 2005. That bugged me a little bit. It shouldn’t, but it did. So I decided to rectify that by writing these words to go here. I wrote these words on 3 September, 2011.

Gee Willikers

with 10 comments

Something new on FFF today, something I hope to do a lot more of in the future. Gee Willikers is a collection of short stories.
The six stories that are there already are just the tip of that darned iceberg; there’s a heck of a lot more of this kinda stuff scribbled in various notebooks that I’ve yet to type up.
Most of these were just notes, really, but I was recently reading Cruel Shoes, a collection of similarly short stories by Steve Martin, which kinda made me realise that these little notes are probably all these stories need to be – tiny fragments. I hope you like them.

P.S.

I’m not sure that this is a good analogy, but y’know when you split up with your girl/boyfriend just before their birthday, and you’ve already bought them a present, so you give it to them anyway? Well, I’ve already made a December Mix, so I thought I’d put it up for you if you want it.

A-ha “Hunting High and Low”
The Lemonheads “The Outdoor Type”
Madness “Michael Caine”
Josh Rouse “Streetlights”
Virginia Astley “A Summer Long Since Passed”
Randy Newman “Marie”
Regina Spektor “Ghost of Corporate Future”
Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian “Forbidden Colours”
Pet Shop Boys “Home and Dry”
Prefab Sprout “If You Don’t Love Me”
The Beautiful South “Prettiest Eyes”
The Crystals “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”

Thanks ever so much for all the nice comments in the previous post. They were greatly appreciated.

The end

with 41 comments

I don’t want to do “blogging” any more.

I’ll still use this page to tell you if there’s new stuff on flipflopflyin.com, just in case any of you use the RSS to find out that particular information, but apart from that: no more blogging.

Of course, it’s possible I’ll change my mind in the new year, but right now, this feels pretty much like the end.

It was fun.

Thanks for reading.

Looking at the camera

with 5 comments

Another small collection of photographs in the Collecting section of FFF. This time they’re from all over the place. I spent an afternoon looking through all the digital photographs on my computer searching for pictures I’d taken where somebody – a passer-by or something – just happened to be looking at the camera at the moment I took the shot. I wonder if any of these people will see their photo here?
Most of us, I guess, would dearly love to have a collection of the photographs other people take where we are in the background. That would be my ultimate dream photo album: hundreds of snaps of Peter and Jane at the top of the Empire State Building (and some beardy, speccy bloke in the background), Alan in front of the Brandenburg Gate (and some beardy, speccy bloke in the background), Julie and the kids on the beach (and some pale, beardy, speccy bloke in the background)…

Not available in the shops

with 10 comments

I quite like how those TV-advertised compilation albums – hits of the sixties or 100 country classics, etc. – are edited to cram in the main chorus bits of as many songs as possible. I had a go at making one.

notavailable.mp3 (870kb)

It took me way longer than a sensible man would spend on such things.
